The Arts in Cuban Culture: Celebrating Havana's 500 Birthday
November 12-17, 2019
Our next Arts in Cuban Culture travel program will acquire a new dimension when we celebrate the foundation of Havana 500 years ago. Framed by a series of activities to celebrate this event, the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana will host a week of celebrations providing a unique opportunity for participants to meet Cubans and learn how Havana evolved to be the amazing city it is.
In addition, the Arts in Cuban Culture travel program provides a unique opportunity for participants to learn how architectural restoration is integrated with visual arts, dance, and music to create a self-sustaining urban development effort in Havana. To witness the process, participants will stay at a private bed and breakfast and share daily experiences with the Cuban people. Cuban experts in the areas of architectural history and restoration and contemporary visual arts will conduct interactive lectures and guided visits to allow for face-to-face exchanges during the day.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL
Our flight to Havana from Tampa, Florida will take one hour. Once in Havana, we will be on our way to our B&B to drop off our luggage. Next we will have a panoramic visit to the city and have lunch in Old Havana. After lunch, we head back to our B&B to complete check-in. You will have free time to relax before we will gather for a welcome dinner.
DAY 2 - COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE AND VISUAL ARTS
After breakfast, a Cuban architect will deliver a walking visit-lecture about architectural restoration projects in Old Havana. The guided visit will describe restoration efforts in three plazas. Founded in November, 1519, UNESCO declared Old Havana Universal Patrimony of Humanity. You will learn about Old Havana as a unique urban development project that integrates community and economic development with art. Meetings with owners of private businesses in Old Havana will provide for an understanding of the emerging Cuban entrepreneur. In Cathedral Square we will visit the Experimental Graphic Workshop (printmaking) to meet Cuban artists. After lunch we will visit The House of Artists to meet established artists in their private studios.
DAY 3 – REPUBLICAN ARCHITECTURAL AND DANCE
Our day will begin with a meeting with a Cuban architect who will deliver a walking visit-lecture of the architectural restoration efforts in the area of Parque Central (Central Park). After lunch we will visit the Lizt Alfonso Dance Company for a private presentation and conversation with dancers. Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba is the precursor and maximum exponent of the "fusion" style in Cuban dance. Founded 25 years ago by its creator, director and choreographer, Lizt Alfonso, it has conquered audiences of all ages in the five continents, performing in hundreds of cities with the strength and rhythm of the Cuba that vibrates today. The Company works with the Old Havana community providing dance classes to 1,200 students.
Before dinner we will meet with a group of Cubans to share their experiences as professionals in the fields of the arts and education.
DAY 4 – VISUAL ARTS
We begin with breakfast at our B&B followed by a museum walk-lecture at the Museum of Fine Arts-Cuban Collection. A Cuban art historian and curator will facilitate a conversation about the most interesting developments in Cuban contemporary arts as these relate to a more general state of affairs in Cuban society during the last decades. The Cuban Art Collection is the most comprehensive display of artwork—spanning nearly three centuries. In the evening, we will have dinner and visit the Fábrica de Arte Cubano (FAC) (Cuban Arts Factory). FAC is the initiative of renowned Cuban musician X-Alfonso. The groundbreaking project uses nightlife as a platform for numerous cultural activities, art exhibits, performances, jazz concerts, even a film screening—all in the same venue on the same night. Here we will have a private meeting with artists exhibiting their work, dancers and musicians.
