Ceramic Making in Cuba (Hands-on Workshop)
Intermediate Level - Students have experience with clay forming techniques, such as hand building and modeling. Students are comfortable with ceramics equipment.
This is a great opportunity to participate in demonstrations, hands-on ceramic workshops and to exchange ideas with Cuban ceramists in Havana and Matanzas. In Havana we will participate in a three days (15 hours) ceramic workshop to include instruction, materials, firing and packaging of pieces. In between workshops we will visit the City of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Museum of Contemporary Ceramic, the 2018 Ceramic Biennial and the University of the Arts. In Matanzas we will tour the city and visit the studio of ceramists and sculptors Osmany Betancourt (Lolo), Dariel Lozano, and Manuel Hernandez.

The workshop will be facilitated by Cuban ceramist Grisell Ofelia Rivera. Grisell Rivera Hernandez was born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1953 and lives and works as a ceramicist in Havana. She studied at a visual arts high school and taught sculpture in the 1970s. From 1985-90 she was at university, studying sculpture at the Superior Institute of Art in Havana. From 1984 to 1998 she was National Specialist of Popular Visual Arts and Crafts, working at the National Centre for the Cultural Community in Havana and has been an independent artist since 1988. She has made many ceramic murals and other commissioned works for corporate, public and private spaces in Havana City.

Itinerary
Our program will start at a hotel near the Tampa International Airport on the night before departure. That evening we will provide an orientation at the hotel for out-of-state (Florida) delegates. (Optional for local delegates, local orientation will be available)
DAY 1
Our flight from Tampa or Miami to Havana, Cuba will take one hour. Once in Havana we will be on our way to accommodations at Solinos B&B in Havana.
DAY 2

After the workshop we will visit the Ceramic Workshop at the University of the Arts (ISA), representative of the post-revolutionary period of architecture in Havana. Located on the former American-owned country club in the western Havana suburb of Cabanacan, the University of the Arts was founded in 1961. ISA has produced an astounding number of Cuba's leading artists and musicians, and remains a vibrant source of artists' training. Enjoy a guided tour of the school's impressive revolutionary architecture and meet students and faculty with an opportunity to arrange the purchase of paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and ceramics

After the workshop we will visit the National Museum of Ceramic Art Old Havana. The museum houses an art collection of nearly 750 pieces, which is constantly on the increase through the buying of new works, financed by the Office of the Historian of the City; as well as donations and loans. The museum's collection includes works by artists Juan Miguel Rodriguéz, Marta Arjhona, Mirta Garcia bush, Amelia Peláez, Sandu Darié, René Portocarrero, Wifredo Lam and Domingo Revenet. The National Museum of Contemporary Ceramics is an excellent opportunity to see a representative of the best in worldwide contemporary pottery.
DAY 5
This day will be for an exploration of Old Havana through a walking tour. Founded in 1519, UNESCO declared Old Havana Universal Patrimony of Humanity. You will learn about Old Havana as a unique urban sustainability development project that integrates community and economic development with art. Through a walking tour guided by an architect-historian we will visit Cathedral and Arms Squares. In Cathedral Square we will visit the Wilfredo Lam Center for Contemporary Art and the Experimental Graphic Workshop (printmaking). After lunch we will visit San Francisco de Asis Plaza, and Plaza Vieja to visit the Fototeca (Cuban Photography Center) and the Rene Portocarrero Screen Printing Workshop.
DAY 6
After breakfast we will travel to Matanzas. The bus ride will take 2 hours with one stop at the Bacunayagua Bridge Observatory. Upon arrival in Matanzas we will visit the studio of ceramists and sculptors Osmany Betancourt (Lolo), Dariel Lozano, and Manuel Hernandez. After lunch we will have a tour of the City of Matanzas and return to Havana.
