"When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind or work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressive creature. He becomes interesting to other people. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and opens ways for a better understanding. Where those who are not artists are trying to close the book, he opens it and shows there are still more pages possible." - Robert Henri. The Art Spirit

 DESCRIPTION

Experience the authentic and fascinating art and culture of Cuba with this special eight-day art making and research program that will allow for self an exchange of ideas among people interested in Cuban art and culture.

This eight-day program will allow for a people-to-people exchange in the area of the visual arts in Cuba.

In Old and New Havana we will become acquainted with its significant architectural master work of art nouveau, art deco, and eclectical styles and also with Havana's lively people's cultural life and idiosyncrasy. One of the sites for the exchanges in Havana will be the Old Havana Renovation Workshop and School. The artists working in the workshop and school are part of the revitalization project in Old Havana, a joint effort in which both the Municipal Government of Old Havana and the City Historian's Office have the aim of providing a real identity to its inhabitants, within the social, historical and architectural context of a district located within the area which was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1982. Participants will be able to see the results of the work done at the Renovation Workshop and School by visiting the Museum of the City of Havana.

At a community level we will visit ceramist Amelia Carballo at the Terracota 4 studio "Ceramica D' Arte. Our exchange with Cuban artists will also include an encounter with two important groups of artists in Havana working at the Experimental Graphic Workshop and the Superior Institute of Art.

At the Institute we will participate in a conference on Cuban art history. This exchange and conference will be expanded with a visit to the National Museum of Fine Arts Cuban collection. The National Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1913 with a collection of contemporary art of artists such as Wifredo Lam, Rene Portocarrero, Eduardo Roca (Choco), Manuel Mendive, Tomas Sanchez, Roberto Fabelo, Pedro Pablo Oliva and Zaida del Rio. There will be time for one-to-one exchanges to inspire you with the Cuban people.

In Cuba the English language will not be a barrier, instead it will be a magnet. Cuban people are very friendly with their neighbors to the North.

Outside of Havana we will visit Las Terrazas Community. Las Terrazas is a rural experience of sustainable development consisting of a forest in the heart of Sierra del Rosario Reserve of the Biosphere and a working community of 900 inhabitants. Our exchange at Las Terrazas will be with the community of artists in woodcarving, painting, and silkscreen. Here we will be able to meet with local resident and Cuban painter Lester Campas.

Our last exchange will take place in the Province of Pinar del Rio by visiting the Museum of Art of Pinar del Rio and the workshop of internationally known artist Pedro Pablo Oliva. The Valley of Viales will be the scenario for relaxation and inspiration. The quality of this agricultural landscape is enhanced by the vernacular architecture of its farms and villages, where a rich multiethnic and artistic society lives, illustrating the cultural development of the islands of the Caribbean, and of Cuba. .

CubArtEdu will tailor dates to accommodate specific groups like art associations and schools.
