Invites you to participate in

Art and Culture in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

April 30 to May 7, 2003

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: February 28, 2003

This eight-day's and seven-night program will allow for inspiration, learning, and enjoyment of the vibrant and richness of the arts and culture of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Our program leader Marcos Carvajal will start the program leading a walking fieldtrip through the narrow streets of Old San Juan to experience five centuries of Spanish Caribbean history. We will become aquainted with significant architectural features of the city, historical sites, forts, plazas, cultural centers, fountains, museums, artist's galleries, studios, workshops and with Old San Juan lively people's cultural life and idiosyncrasy.

We will be part of Old San Juan's "Noche de Galerias," (Gallery Night), a gallery gala night and unique opportunity to participate in art exhibitions with art lovers, artists, gallery owners, and art collectors. Our exchange with Puerto Rican artists will include an encounter with two important groups of artists in Old San Juan: the Art League and the School of Fine Art of San Juan. At the School of Fine Arts we will participate in a conference on Puerto Rican art history. This exchange and conference will be expanded with a visit to the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico and the Contemporary Museum of Art.

The Museum of Art of Puerto Rico incorporates a modern five-story structure with a 1920 neo-classic building. The Museum supports Puerto Rico's 500 years old tradition in painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, folk art, photography and other contemporary media.

We will combine a morning trip to "El Yunque," the only Tropical Rain Forest of the U.S. National Park System with an afternoon of swimming, sun tanning and relaxing at Luquillo Beach, shaded by imposing coconut palm trees and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

We will also visit the Colonial City of Ponce, Puerto Rico's second largest city. The city of Ponce unveils an enchanting portrait of colonial history, art and culture. The architectural splendor and detailed neoclassic and art deco style of the city makes Ponce an essential part in your itinerary. The visit includes the Ponce Museum of Art, the largest art museum in the Caribbean.

There will be free time to paint, draw, take photographs and videos.

Our accomodations will be in the heart of Old San Juan, just across from the Cathedral at El Convento Hotel, a former Carmelite convent built three and a half centuries ago. Today El Convento Hotel, a complete refurbishment carefully restored and a member of historic Hotels of America has set new standards of luxury, comfort and service while preserving the unique character and mystique of the hotel.

Marcos Carvajal, our Travel & Learn Program Leader, has been a visiting artist in resident at the School of Art Altos de Jajome and a faculty member at the University of Puerto Rico, the Museum School of Fine Art of Boston and Monserrat School of Art in Beverly, Ma. In addition, he was program leader for the "Painting in the Rain Forest of Puerto Rico," "Art Making in Cuba: An Artist to Artist Exchange" programs with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston and Travel & Learn's "Arts and Culture in Cuba: A People to People Exchange Program.
